No Right Way

The call took much shorter than I expected. I would have called her earlier, if not for my usual pangs of nervousness thinking of the best way to say it, and running case scenarios in my head.

However, we were to meet half-an-hour later. The call was no longer avoidable. Taking a deep breath, I dialed her number.

...*toot toot*...

An automated human immediately prompted me to punch in her extension. No sooner had I said those few words I'd rehearsed in my mind, she said, "Ok, bye" and dropped the phone. Very quickly.
On hindsight, there is no right way to decline an interview, is there?
