Fibreglass Frenzy

Some guy spoilt the fibreglass insulation, and now particles of this are blowing out from the venting system, forcing everyone in the office to don white surgical masks. Now we look like cotton-nosed, wide-eyed bugs. Except not that cute. And feeling quite dumb.

And I realize that with this camouflage, you can't tell whether someone is smiling or not. Very few people have emotive eyes. And that got me thinking, that just by covering this small part of our face, we already lose that much ability to converse and relate.

What we're more concerned is, is breathing in fibreglass dangerous? Despite the Health and Safety Department trying to convince us it isn't, their "everything is fine and under control" tone doesn't. And that they'll "test and get lab results in three days' time" doesn't help either.

"Fibreglass dust and fibres may cause a stinging, itchy sensation when rubbed on the skin. This can happen to people working with fibreglass insulation, and it occurs particularly in folds of skin around wrists, collars and waistbands. Perspiration aggravates the condition. [...] Fibreglass insulation installed in buildings does not have adverse health effects on occupants." - source

No adverse health effects. Fine and good, if not for the fact that it's a website by the Australian government.

[edit: June 25]
The fibreglass contamination recurred this morning in a cubicle near to mine. The Health and Safety department's silence on the lab results is curiously suspect. What's more, this corporation adopts the U.S. OSHA safety standards; an internet search reveals this:
"OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) mandates cancer warning labels on products containing fiberglass that may become airborne, including fiberglass insulation." (emphasis added) - source

Why do you keep talking about smiling at work? Is it that important? You don't have the my-parents-passed-away look so I don't think you need to force it.

runawaycat - I believe smiling at work is important. Feels great when after a hard day at work, someone returns your smile!

himilkcaramel - Look at the mirror and do this :). Well, do you?

ji yuan - Fibreglass is potentially cancerous inside the body. How not to worry?

But if it's not coming out naturally then there's no point. I have a feeling you're thinking too much about it.

Five paragraphs in this post. Four on fibreglass, one on smiling. On the contrary, I think you're reading too much into it ;)
