We are one "Hungry" Community

Friday, July 13, just after 10 a.m. At Pusat Mahasiswa (Undergraduates' Centre), which is maintained by the Student Affairs and Development Division. The door says "Selamat Datang" (Welcome) in fancy cursive, but as I push on it, find that this welcomeness is not followed through.

Puzzled, I reread the sign that states office hours as 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., after which would be a lunch break. A glance at my watch shows 10.17 a.m. Peering through the tinted glass door, I spot a cleaning staff standing at the reception desk. He motions for me to use a smaller door beside.

I enter into a waiting room and head into the reception area. The cleaner asks what I want, and I say, "I'm here to collect my PPMS cert. Do you know where they put it?".

The lone cleaner replies, "Only the boss is around now," motioning to a room behind him, "the rest are out, having their meals".

I reiterate that I am just here to collect my certificate, and if he could ask his boss whether he knows where it's located. He looks uncomfortably hesitant. After a few seconds of silence, he exclaims, "Nanti mai-lah!" (Come back later-lah!)

Back outside, I see a matronly lady of Malay descent, pushing on the glass door, to no avail. After one attempt, she stalls briefly and walks away in the opposite direction.

I leave the building amused that she seemed so accustomed to this way of life.

Tell me about it! I've been through the same thing one too many times that I don't even bother to 'look' for anybody for anything anymore...they are all the same!

Reminds me of the joke about the Malaysian Hell:

The US Hell has an electric chair, and a devil pouring hot oil over you as you fry in the chair.

The other Hells are pretty much as nasty, and yet...

There's a long line of people waiting outside the Malaysian Hell.

"Eh, how come everyone wants to come here? Isn't it pretty much the same as the others?"

"Yes, but here, the electricity always short-circuits, and the devil in charge of the oil comes in late, goes out to minum after half-an hour, doesn't come back until it's time to go out for lunch..."

hahah this is like so common. esp for government sectors, technically, every hour is a tea-break.

clare - There's still hope for change! Bad apples are, but few and far in between. At least, that's what I choose to believe. Optimism is healthy :)

sheena - Thanks for the joke. Btw, does the Malaysian Heaven leak? :D

xin - And they're getting paid more for this, no?
