Feels Like Home

At first listen, this song may sound a bit like I Hear You but both songs tell entirely different stories. Feels Like Home actually contains a surprising number of dark imageries. Nevertheless, I held the original lyrics intact for this take and you can interpret them for yourself. I must refrain from explaining too much of the song to not spoil it for you.

After listening, please drop me a comment. Lyrics are at the sidebar (at bottom of this page).

Note: This piece was actually written way before I Hear You but was never posted because for some reason, Purevolume couldn't host it properly.

Feels Like Home

Driving against the wind
Hold the gear at high
See my life moments flash before me
Something tells me I should be afraid
but

* It feels like home
It feels like home
I remember feeling this way before
I knew I'd feel this way once more

As the clouds rush in
Raining on my eye
Burn these candles all around me
All I can say is that I'll be OK
I'll be OK!

(Repeat *)

It feels like home

When I heard it that night long ago I thought...because all I heard was "it feels like home" I thought it's a song reminiscising about home but...

I just took a closer look at the lyrics. You may or may not have written it to mean this way but as I see it, it is indeed a dark song..

The person is dying or in serious injury, was perhaps suicidal, and may have resorted self-harm to find peace/high before. Because he has experienced these, "it feels like home" to feel the familiar "high" again, probably in automobile speeding (but Driving against the wind
Hold the gear at high
could refer to another self inflicted injury). He knows that what he's doing is abnormal (Something tells me I should be afraid)

As the clouds rush in, raining on my eye gives me the impression that the person is on the the ground, could be seriously injured in a crash from the speeding. In the rain, he can see the clouds and feel/watch the rain fall to his eyes.

People come to help. They are candles all around him, symbolizing hope and recovcery. But he doesn't want the help. He says he'll be OK, but it is not so. What he means is that this nearing death experience has been the norm for him due to past suicide attempts.

Prior to this incident, he may have been enroute to recocvery from his mental illness/depression. But something happened, which led to him feeling this way now. And he quickly recalls how in the past, he believed that he will never escape from this mental state. This thought is reflected in I remember feeling this way before, I knew I'd feel this way once more

Now, the song sounds so much different to me than when I first heard it.

Why write such a morbid song? if isn't intended to mean that way, then what's your interpretation?

The copy that I got has
"Forgive me for I've sinned; Every plan was a lie" in place of "As the clouds rush in; Raining on my eye"

Juliana, I'm amazed at your ability to discern the meanings so well! :)

Most of your interpretations are spot on! Allow me to add to your comments:

Driving against the Wind = living life against societal norms and persevering (to hold the gear) though it's filled with considerable resistance.

*Note: I also used the Wind symbolism in Beneath The Wind to signify societal pressure. To be "beneath the wind" means not subject to societal expectations, or living below the radar - generally referring to children.

Light these Candles all around me = means to wish one luck on one's journey (life is a journey, and the narrator as the Traveller). The narrator says not to worry, "I'll be ok! I'll be ok!"

"Something tells [him that he] should be afraid", but this experience is not new to the narrator, in fact it "feels like home" to him!

*Note: In the first line of I Hear You ("Fighting strange old shadows"), the word "old" means the same thing, i.e. though strange, they are perfectly familiar (old) to the narrator.

On the lyrics change to verse 2
Originally, it was intended to be "Forgive me for I've sinned / Every pledge was a lie" = looking back at one's life with deep regret, knowing one was different and can never lead a normal life.

Then as I recorded it, I ad-libbed it to "As the clouds rush in / Raining on my eye" = lying helpless/motionless on the ground, raindrops washing over one's eyes signify crying, or a new realization of his life.

I felt the change complements the overall imagery, and because "sin" and "lie" implies the narrator feels he is in the wrong, which may not necessary be so.

The version you have, recently rerecorded, contains the original lyrics.

"Why write such a morbid song?"

Honestly, I don't know.

oh.. actually your interpretation isn't morbid at all. Hrm, now I wonder why I interprete it so morbidly. XD

I'm not clear on what "home" should come to mean. Do you mean that the person is very comfortable with the new experience that he says "it feels like home" to him (home here implying a place where one is relaxed, comfortable in);

or that the new experience isn't pleasant, and yet "it feels like home" because his life has always been this way (home here implying unpleasant experiences that he has had, but it is called "home" because the bad experience has occurred so often that it has become the norm to him)?

Errata: Should be Burn these Candles all around me in my previous comment.

Actually your darker interpretation is also right. I'm just explaining the parts you left off.

On the meaning of "home"

I believe I've touched on this previously. Firstly, "feels like home" is not a new experience. The Narrator is perfectly familiar with what he's going through, and even anticipates it!

"I remember feeling this way before, I knew I'd feel this way once more." Note that in the song, I connected the two lines together so it can also be heard as "I remember feeling this way before I knew..." Either way it's heard confirms the above.

Hope that helps :)
